How to Plan Diving Sessions in the Maldives – An Outstanding Nation for Divers

The picturesque Maldives, undoubtedly one of the foremost holiday destinations on the globe, attracts a multitude of foreign visitors. Many of these travelers arrive on these islands with the intention of diving in the local waters, as this destination offers an entrancing and thriving undersea environment to explore. Here, you will encounter stunning undersea scenery and many kinds of exotic sea creatures and coral varieties. Some key insights into diving in the Maldives are provided below.

 Understand the basics

The Maldives happens to be an archipelago of small islands situated 400 miles from the southwestern coast of India. The country consists of more than 1,000 small islands grouped into 26 atolls. Interestingly, over 95% of the geographical area of the Maldives is made up of the ocean! It is considered to be the smallest nation in Asia and also happens to be counted amongst the lowest-lying countries in the world. The Maldives is known for its lovely beaches, picturesque natural scenery, interesting culture, and water sports opportunities, including diving.

Take note of the marine life

Beneath the waters of the ocean that surrounds the Maldives, you will encounter a remarkable collection of captivating sea creatures. While diving here, you will have the opportunity to observe marine life such as mantas, whale sharks, eagle rays, schools of exotic fish and much more, in addition to attractive corals. You will find that many of the dive sites feature sea creatures such as napoleon wrasse, reef sharks – including whitetip, blacktip and grey reef varieties – barracuda, different kinds of rays, tuna and trevally. You may even encounter hammerhead sharks at some of the atolls.

 Be familiar with the dive environments

Whilst diving in the Maldives, you will encounter several different diving environments. For instance, a ‘faru’ would be an atoll’s outer reef or possibly an island reef. Meanwhile, a ‘giri’ would be around the reef, with a top that stretches to the surface; giris typically feature different kinds of sea creatures and would also be suitable for beginner divers.

 A ‘thila’ would be similar to a girl but would be found further down; here, you will encounter sea life like gorgonians, soft corals, and plenty of fish. On the other hand, a channel, also called a pass, would be the gateway to an atoll; often the currents will bring mantas, sharks and tunas here. Additionally, lagoons while not featuring many sea creatures would be perfect for novice divers.

 Know the atolls

In the Maldives, you will find many atolls at which you could dive. A popular dive locality would be Ari Atoll which is known for attracting whale sharks, mantas and hammerheads. Another well-known destination for divers would be North Male Atoll which features dive sites such as Manta Point and the Maldives Victory wreck. Consider the time to dive

Generally, it may be said that the time of the northeast monsoon, from January through April would be an attractive period for scuba diving; it will be dry and warm whilst there will be very good visibility in the waters. On the other hand, during the rainy period which extends from May through July, you can expect rather unpredictable weather. Finally, in the period from August through November there will be a great deal of plankton in the waters of certain areas; while this may affect visibility, it also attracts creatures like whale sharks and manta rays that feed on the plankton.
