How to Travel Around the Maldives – Getting About a Tropical Paradise
Since the Maldives is made up of numerous small islands, transport within the country is not like what you would usually expect when travelling to other destinations. Here, the two main modes of travel are either by seaplane or boat though you get a few other options too depending on the island. With that in mind, these are some things you should know about the various modes of local transport before you visit the Maldives.
By Seaplanes

One way to get about the Maldives is by way of seaplane which as you might expect, offers breathtaking views of the islands and atolls. Such means of transport are usually reserved for getting to islands and resorts that are located a great distance from the main international airport and the capital, Male. You do get domestic planes (that are not seaplanes) too, though resorts will usually offer seaplane services for direct access to the respective private island. Keep in mind, however, depending on where the resort island is located, such transfers can be quite costly too.
By Speedboats
Another great way to travel is by way of a speedboat that is well-suited when it comes to getting to islands that are closer to Male; in fact, some of the best all-inclusive resorts in Maldives even offer luxury speedboat or luxury catamaran transfers as part of their package which is ideal for travellers flying into the main international airport. If you are based at places like the South Male Atoll, you will find your journey time can take as little as 20 minutes; what’s more, the thrilling ride across the Indian Ocean to your resort will be unforgettable as well.
By Dhonis & Yachts
Once you are based at your island resort in Maldives, there are several means to travel further afield including by dhoni or yacht. Dhoni is a name given for a traditional local boat and offers an ideal way to sail into the horizon, while you can also charter a yacht for private excursions. Be it fishing in the morning on a dhoni using the typical line and hook technique, romantic sunset cruises on a private yacht or excursions to local islands or secluded sandbanks, there’s much to enjoy. Both these forms of transport are featured at properties such as OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI for truly memorable adventures.
By Local Ferries
Those looking to travel to inhabited islands from places like Male can also consider using local ferries; keep in mind that for tourists, heading to local islands may not be possible due to pandemic-related restrictions so check ahead before you visit. Local ferries are the cheapest form of transport and offer direct connections to islands quite far off too. However, remember that schedules can suddenly change, making ferries, not as reliable as private transfers, while they do not offer direct connections to island resorts either.
By Bicycle
A great way to get about, depending on the resort or island you are based at, is by bicycle. Since islands are relatively small, you can easily explore what’s on offer amidst the coastal vistas and refreshing sea breezes; check to see if the resort you are staying at not only offers bicycles for adults but also those for children and even sidecars for toddlers so you can have some pedal-powered family fun!
By Taxi & Bus
These two forms of transport in Maldives are limited to larger inhabited islands like Male. Even though Male is comparatively small, you will find taxis that can be easily hailed and provide air-conditioned rides; rates are likely to be higher at night past a certain time (generally after 11:00pm), while it is not uncommon for passengers to share rides. You will also find a few public buses that are relatively cheap and service limited routes including connections from the Velana International Airport to Hulhumale and the seaplane terminal.
