How To Explore Townsville Through a Road Trip – Discover a Colourful City

Townsville is an urban city that is situated on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. It is a city that is sunny and bright most months of the year and is close to the Great Barrier Reef, making it a very special destination. Townsville is also a famous road trip destination. If you are trying to plan your next road trip, this is an option that you should consider.

 1. Getting to Townsville

The road trip from Brisbane to your holiday accommodation such as Oaks Townsville Gateway Suites will be a truly picturesque one. You will pass through a range of different landscapes including beautiful beaches, mountains, cities, and natural wonders. Once in Townsville, it won’t be enough just to drive around in your car. Instead, Townsville is best explored both by water and land.

 2. Cleveland Bay

This is considered to be the pride and joy of Townsville. Most of the Townsville Australia hotels are situated close to it. There is a golden beach that extends for miles near the bay as well as a promenade that is dotted with beautiful palm trees. It’s a great place to drive to spend an entire afternoon in.

 3. Ross Creek and the Great Barrier Reef

Drive your car or van to Ross Creek where the city’s port is situated. From here, you can take a boat or cruise to the Great Barrier Reef. This reef is world-famous as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also one of the most biodiverse places anywhere in the world. It is considered to be a protected area and is highly safeguarded against anthropogenic impacts. If you are a fan of marine life, this is something that should be on your bucket list. You will be able to explore the reef via boat and even go snorkeling there. Once you are done, you can drive to a nearby restaurant or café by the beach and enjoy your afternoon there.

 4. Magnetic Island

Another quick drive you can take is to Magnetic Island. This is technically a suburb of Townsville and is ideal for a day trip. More than half of the Magnetic Island belongs to the Great Barrier Reef National Park. It has over 20 kilometres of trails that are surrounded by beautiful scenery and are perfect for walking. Another interesting thing about this island is its wildlife. You can spot koalas in the wild on this island as well as other mammals and birds.

 5.  Castle Hill

This doesn’t necessarily have to be a drive but is a place that you should explore. Castle Hill is situated in the centre of Townsville and is a 290-metre-high granite monolith. There are walking tracks that wind their way around the hill. This is not a difficult climb since most locals like to incorporate it as a part of their daily exercise routine. Once you are at the top you can enjoy beautiful views of Townsville city and more. If you are too lazy to climb, you can also get to the peak by car.

 6. Billabong Sanctuary

One of the stops during your road trip to Townsville has to be the Billabong Sanctuary. It is home to the most beloved native species of Australia including kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and wombats. It’s a great place to get up close and personal with these species and get pictures that will be valuable for a lifetime. You can also hand-feed kangaroos, cuddle with koalas and more. There are guided tours and shows at the sanctuary, which also gives you educational experiences. All in all, this is a fantastic place to spend a few hours with your loved ones.
