How to travel around Singapore easily - Affordable and convenient travels

Characterized by its vibrant shopping districts, eclectic cuisine, and historical attractions, Singapore is a destination like no other. Despite its modest size, this city-state has much to offer its business and leisure travellers. Much of Singapore’s surroundings and architecture resembles state-of-the-art designs and technology. Its transport network is perhaps among the most efficient globally. Discover how you can travel around this cosmopolitan nation with ease.

Whiz to your destination on the MRT

Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is the nation’s local subway. It is the quickest mode of transport in the city, with trains calling at stations every 2-3 minutes at peak times and 5-7 minutes at other times. There are currently 5 lines in operation: North-South (red), North-East (purple), East-West (green), Circle Line (orange), and Downtown (blue). Don’t fret about which line to take, as there are handy maps posted on the walls of MRT stations depicting the stops along each line. Similarly, there are also clear signs indicating the most appropriate exit to take. Whether staying at the YWCA or a Singapore apartment hotel, MRT stations are conveniently located near most accommodation options.

Fares range between SGD 1.40 to 2.50 for a single journey. However, if you plan to spend several days in Singapore, consider using the EZ-Link card or a Singapore Tourist Pass. The EZ-Link card allows you to top up credit at MRT stations, and you simply have to tap the card on the reader. A Singapore Tourist Pass offers unlimited train and bus travel and comes in 1, 2, or 3-day passes.

Slow-paced yet convenient, Singapore also boasts an extensive bus network. While the MRT does not afford views of the city centre as it is primarily underground, the bus allows you to enjoy views of the city as you pass by. Bus routes take you almost anywhere in Singapore, while many bus stops are located within easy distance of many hotels, including the likes of PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Singapore. Bus services are offered by SBS Transit and SMRT. Be sure to visit their websites for information about schedules and routes or download smartphone apps such as SG Buses for real-time bus schedules.

Bus fares are cheaper than the MRT, but you can also use your Singapore Tourist Pass or EZ-Link card when you travel. If paying with cash, be sure to have the exact change. The SMRT network also offers late-night bus services between the city centre and the suburbs.

Flag down a taxi

If the bus or MRT is not your scene and you are looking for a more comfortable ride, consider hailing a taxi from the street or at a designated taxi stand. Remember that ordering a taxi during peak hours can be challenging. This also rings true during occasions when it’s raining or even at night. Popular taxi companies in Singapore include Premier Taxis, Comfort Taxi & City Cab, and SMRT Taxis.

Taxis are metered with base fares ranging between SGD 3 to 3.40, while SGD 0.22 is charged for every 400m after that. Surcharges apply during peak hours, after midnight, for airport trips and bookings via phone. Alternatively, you can opt to travel using ride-sharing apps such as Grab.

Rent a bike or car

Cycling around Singapore’s city centre is not ideal due to erratic driving by motorists and the hot, humid temperatures. There are designated biking areas at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Tampines, and Pulau Ubin, and any one of Singapore’s parks. Bikes can be rented from places near East Coast Park and on Sentosa Island and Pulau Ubin. Alternatively, consider downloading a bike-sharing app such as Mobike and ofo to rent a bike.

If you fancy driving around, then consider renting a car. However, you would need to produce either your home driver’s license or an international driving permit. Popular car rental companies include Avis, Hertz, and Hawk, while rental rates typically start at SGD 60 per day. Singapore has excellent road signs, but stay alert as you may encounter aggressive, erratic motorists occasionally.
