The Caribbean is exotic, exciting, and drenched in golden sunshine. A dream holiday destination to many, this idyllic location is not without dangers. Most nationals are issued a visa on arrival. However, the policy can be different for some nations. Hence, it is best to check with Caribbean immigration authorities in your country before planning your trip. It’s good to obtain a visa even when visiting the islands for a day. Do not carry your passport around with you. Hide it in your hotel room. If you must carry your passport, take it in a concealed manner, never leave it lying around on the beach while you take a swim. Also, leave a copy of your passport back at your hotel. If you are travelling across the islands and need to carry your documents, choose domestic flights. If you are travelling to the Caribbean from nations other than the USA, obtain your US dollars before flying out as currency exchange facilities are not always available throughout the islands.

Personal Safety in the Caribbean

When withdrawing money from the local ATMs, take care to keep your PIN number secure. Be aware of your surroundings when withdrawing money from ATMs as tourists have been robbed after a withdrawal. Ideally, have a companion keep a lookout for you while you perform the transaction. Take along only the necessary valuables. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery. Also, keep in mind that if you have hired a car during your stay in the Caribbean, it's wise to not leave valuables locked inside. This includes cameras, phones etc. Locals can identify the hired cars from the number plates and car break-ins are common.

You must know that same-sex relationships are not widely accepted in the Caribbean, which is conservative in this context. And such relationships are deemed illegal by law. Hence, displays of affection between same-sex couples can result in a jail sentence. The locals too do not take kindly to these displays and such people may face adversities on some of the more remote islands.

Being Aware of Natural Dangers in the Caribbean

The islands are sometimes prone to nature’s wrath. And hurricanes are a common occurrence between June and September. Mudslides, tsunamis, and floods too can follow hurricanes. If you are nervous, do try to avoid the high-risk months and book your holiday during the safe period.

Driving and Transport in the Caribbean

The islands are loved for their laid-back ambience, which can be reflected in driving attitudes too. And so, road rules are not always adhered to. And driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is common. Reckless driving will at times, be reflected by your bus or taxi driver too.
