How to spend your first 24 hours in Colombo, Sri Lanka - Kickstart Your Holiday with a Bang!
Oftentimes, the first twenty-four hours of a vacation in a foreign country are weighed down by travel to reach your accommodation or by fatigue due to jet lag and so on. Most also decide to take the first day slowly, observing and acclimating rather than committing to a lot of activities. However, if you want to kickstart your vacation from the moment you land, consider following some of the below steps instead of what you would normally do!
Step One – Do Not Travel Too Far from the Airport!
The first piece of advice to start having fun from day one is to not arrange your itinerary in a way that you have to travel too far directly from the airport. Most tourists arrive at the main international airport (Bandaranaike International Airport) of the country. This airport is located in the Katunayake Suburb of Negombo. If you want to make the most of your time on day one, book yourself into a hotel in a nearby area such as Wattala or Negombo. These are coastal towns and during your time here you can get right down to business enjoying the beach and ocean. There is nothing better than the ocean breeze to cure travel fatigue. There are many resorts and hotels near Colombo, the commercial capital, that are also not too far from the airport and located in coastal towns. One example of this is the Pegasus Reef hotel that is located in Wattala. From there, it is a 30-minute drive from the airport and a 30-minute drive to the commercial capital of the country.
Step Two – Pre-book Spa Treatments
Another way to help you rejuvenate from your travels is to enjoy some relaxing spa treatments. They will help you relieve the pain from stiff muscles and help you limber up in preparation for all the fun you are to have outdoors during your time on the island. Furthermore, some treatments are specifically aimed at helping with jetlag – keep an eye out for those. The kinds of massages available in Sri Lanka tend to vary, but types like Balinese massages, Swiss massages, and traditional Sri Lankan massages related to the ancient practice of Ayurveda are all types that are found commonly across the island’s numerous resorts. So, make sure to book your spot in advance before you fly so that you will be received without any issue on arrival. Rather than heading out to a spa, it is more convenient if you are able to book a resort or hotel that has an in-house spa so that it is convenient, and you can make the most of your time on day one to relax.
Step 3 – Explore Colombo

If your itinerary is all about exploring the beaches on the west, south, and east coasts and then travelling to the national parks and the hill country in the central part of the island, you might not have allocated a few days to spend exploring the commercial capital, Colombo. However, that would be a mistake. To understand how the locals live in the commercial hub of the island, and if you want to do a lot of shopping, this is the place to explore. So, if your itinerary does not allow you to spend a few days here or even a night, that is fine. But you can always allocate time during the day on your first day in the country to explore Colombo. Seeing as it is less than an hour away from the airport, you can spend half a day there before you move on to exploring the other parts of the island.
