The Maldives receives the same swells that reach Indonesia, making surfing in both these regions quite similar! However, the latitude is lower in the Maldives compared to Indonesia. There are three major surfing areas you should be aware of.
- The North and South Male Atolls: You should head here during the South-West Monsoon seasons that starts in May and ends in December. From May to August, the waves are at their peak.
- Central Atolls: This place boasts standard waves that are long and clean varying in height from 3 to 6 feet. It is never flat during the austral winter period (April-October).
- Southern Atolls located in the South is best for surfing from February till April and from September till November.
Currents and Tides
In the Maldives, the currents and tides play a big role in determining the surfing environments. All of the surfing breaks are localized near the atolls' narrow channels. The currents that flow through the channels, therefore, can be extremely strong. During the well-known south-west monsoons, waves flow into the external reef of the atolls, providing ideal surfing conditions. For all tides, the swelling lines are just perfect, and the waves hold the same form and shape making it ideal for first-timers too! This makes the Maldives an ideal surfing vacation for any surfers, both the novice and the pros.
